County Championships 2012

The Joan Gale Cup

A sunny breezy day greeted us at Ashburnham golf club on 10 th April, when 23 players arrived to play the Joan Gale Cup which is also the qualifying round for the County Championships . The course looked magnificent. The winner was Becky Harries of Haverfordwest with 74 gross, followed by Shan Lewis of Carmarthen – 79 and Sophie Anderson of Ashburnham - 81.

The top 8 players from the morning round entered the knockout stage.

In the first match Becky won against Elin Jones( Carmarthen ), Vicki Thomas ( Carmarthen ) against Olwen Davies (Ashburnham), Sophie Anderson (Ashburnham) against Georgia Thomas (Tenby) and Nia Greville (Ashburnham) against Shan Lewis.

In the semi-finals the following morning, Vicki beat Becky, and Nia beat Sophie.

This left Vicki Thomas and Nia Greville to battle it out in the final. It was an exciting, closely fought match, with Nia producing some amazing saves on the par 3s to keep the match going, but eventually succumbing to Vicki’s experience and determination, loosing on the 17 th hole 2&1.

The Second Flight

The players in positions 9-12 from the opening round then entered the draw for the Second Flight. Here Elspeth Owen (Haverfordwest) beat Julie Ace (Ashburnham), and Bethan Morris (Tenby) beat Judith Stevens ( Derllys Court ).

The final was another very close match, but Bethan eventually prevailed against Elspeth 2 up.
